In the final stages of the match, MI needed 24 runs from the last seven balls. Tilak was at the crease, having scored 25 runs off 23 balls. However, he was finding it hard to time the ball and hit boundaries. So, the team made the decision to send in Mitchell Santner, a bowling all-rounder, in place of Tilak. The move was meant to get someone who could hit big shots and finish the match quickly.
This decision led to a lot of debate. Some people thought it was strange for a batter who was already set to retire out, while others believed it was the right choice, since MI needed someone to hit big runs in the last few balls.
MI’s captain, Hardik Pandya, explained after the match that sometimes batters have days when nothing goes their way, even if they try hard. He said the team needed someone who could hit big shots, which is why they chose to bring in Santner.
Tilak Varma Retire Out made him only the fourth player in IPL history to do so. The other three players who have retired out in previous IPL seasons are Ravichandran Ashwin, Atharva Taide, and Sai Sudharsan.
