Timeless Legend: King Kazu Plays in His 40th Football Season at Age 57!

Japan’s Kazuyoshi “King Kazu” Miura played his first game of his 40th professional football season this weekend and shows no signs of retiring soon.

The former national team forward, who turned 58 in February, came on as a late substitute in Atletico Suzuka’s 2-1 win over YSCC Yokohama in Japan’s fourth division on Sunday.

Miura signed an 18-month loan deal with Suzuka last June, but a leg injury in January kept him from playing at the start of this season.

After the match, Miura told Kyodo news, “I want to play again and show my spirit. I was able to play thanks to everyone’s support. Now, I want to improve even more.”

He started his career in Brazil with Santos in 1986, making his first two appearances at just 15 years old, when he moved there alone to follow his football dream.

He came back to Japan as a well-known international player and joined Verdy Kawasaki. He helped the team win the first two J.League championships in 1993 and 1994. For Japan, he scored 55 goals in 89 games, with his last match in 2000.

Miura has also played in countries like Italy, Croatia, Australia, and Portugal during his long career. Although he is still playing, he has a long way to go to beat Egyptian Ezzeldin Bahader’s record of playing professionally at age 74.

Because of his love and dedication to football, it would be unwise to count him out.

“When I was about 35 or 40, I thought to myself, ‘I can’t keep playing like this forever,’” he said in an interview with FIFA.com in April.

“But instead of thinking about quitting, I tried harder to improve. It’s not that I don’t know the word ‘retire,’ but I just have never wanted to stop playing.”
