Harbhajan Singh Nominated for BCCI Top Post, Sachin Tendulkar Rules Out Role

Harbhajan Singh

A few days ago, there were rumours that Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar could become the president of the country’s cricket board BCCI. He recently ruled out that possibility. Now, the same rumours have started about another former Indian star Harbhajan Singh. The discussion has intensified after the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) nominated the 45-year-old star.

Harbhajan has played 367 matches for India in all formats. The sports-based website Cricbuzz has published information about his nomination, but there is no official announcement from the PCA yet. The BCCI will only be able to participate in the elections after getting the approval of various state cricket associations. Earlier, the Indian government party BJP has shown interest in giving responsibilities to successful personalities in the sports field in various organizations.

Earlier, both Sourav Ganguly and Roger Binny, as former Indian international cricketers, took advantage of this policy and became BCCI President. After the rumors started about Harbhajan, Cricbuzz wanted to contact him, but he did not respond to phone calls and messages. As a result, we have to wait for two weeks to confirm the truth, when the candidates have to submit their nomination papers. In the announcement by BCCI election officer AK Joti, it was said that the deadline for submitting nominations is September 20 to 21. The voting will be held on September 28.

The candidates have been asked whether they have held any elected office in the BCCI or any of its member bodies in the past, as per the instructions of the Returning Officer. The notification said, “The representative shall mention in an information sheet all the elected offices held previously or currently in the BCCI and/or any full member body of the BCCI and their tenure. This information shall be filled in the prescribed Form ‘C’, which shall be signed by the representative concerned and certified by a Notary/Commissioner of Oaths.”

In the upcoming BCCI elections, there will be voting for the five posts of President, Vice-President, Secretary, Joint Secretary and Treasurer. However, as per the provisions of the recently held BCCI AGM, there is little possibility of contesting these posts. It is expected that the current Secretary Debjyoti Saikia, Treasurer Prabhtej Singh Bhatia and Joint Secretary Rohan Desai will continue in their posts respectively.

According to the election schedule, yesterday, Friday (September 12) was the last day for nomination of representatives of state cricket associations. These representatives will be present at the AGM and vote if necessary. Their list is scheduled to be published on Saturday (September 13). After the submission of nominations (September 20-21), the scrutiny will be done on September 22. Candidates can withdraw their nominations on September 23. After that, the final list will be published. Voting and counting will be held on September 28.

Earlier, Sachin Tendulkar’s management company SRT Sports Management said in a statement, “Our attention has been drawn to the rumours and reports regarding Sachin Tendulkar being considered and nominated for the post of BCCI President. We would like to clearly state that nothing of the kind has happened. We urge everyone to refrain from creating baseless rumours.”
