Blow for England: England fast bowler Olly Stone is set to miss the majority of the upcoming five-match Test series against India after undergoing surgery on his right knee. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed that Stone will be sidelined for at least 14 weeks, following persistent discomfort during Nottinghamshire’s pre-season tour in Abu Dhabi.
Blow for England Ahead of India Series
Blow for England as Stone, who last featured in a Test match in September against Sri Lanka, was eyeing a return to England’s red-ball setup through a strong domestic season with Nottinghamshire. However, his hopes have been dashed due to yet another injury setback. This marks the latest in a series of fitness issues that have plagued the 30-year-old’s career.
Blow for England: The ECB revealed that Stone began experiencing increasing pain during the pre-season camp, prompting further medical evaluation. Scans conducted this week revealed the need for surgery. He will now begin a period of rehabilitation, working closely with the medical teams at both the ECB and Nottinghamshire, the statement read.
His absence adds to England’s growing list of unavailable fast bowlers. Mark Wood and Brydon Carse are also on the sidelines, leaving England short on pace options ahead of a busy summer schedule.
The five-match Test series against India is scheduled to begin on June 20, following a one-off Test against Zimbabwe on May 22. Given the timeline of his recovery, Stone is expected to miss at least the first three matches of the India series. A return for the final two Tests remains a slim possibility, depending on his rehabilitation progress.
Realistically, Stone is more likely to make his comeback during The Hundred, where he plays for London Spirit. The tournament kicks off on August 5, by which time he should be fully fit.
Stone’s injury is a major blow for England, not just for the national team, but also for Nottinghamshire, who were counting on his pace to lead their bowling attack in the county championship. The domestic season begins this Friday, but Nottinghamshire will now have to cope without one of their key bowlers for the first half of the campaign.
Despite his limited appearances in international cricket—just five Tests—Stone has shown promise when fit. His ability to bowl with pace and accuracy made him a strong contender for a role in England’s pace unit this summer. However, injuries have consistently hindered his progress.
With the Test summer fast approaching, England’s selectors will now need to explore backup options. The absence of multiple frontline pacers could open the door for fringe players or new faces to step up and make their mark.
As Stone begins his recovery, both England and Nottinghamshire will be hoping for a smooth rehabilitation process and a strong return later in the season.
