Former Indian coach Ravi Shastri called India’s Test series win in Australia (2018/19, 2020/21) a 24 carat achievement, and compared it to beating the West Indies in the 1980s.
Former Indian cricketer and head coach Ravi Shastri recently discussed India’s two consecutive Test series wins in Australia (2018/19 and 2020/21). He compared this win to beating the West Indies in the 1980s, when the West Indies cricket team was at its peak.
It is worth mentioning that before 2018/19, India had never won a Test series in Australia. But during Ravi Shastri’s coaching tenure, the Indian team performed brilliantly twice on Australian soil and achieved these historic series wins.
Ravi Shastri Said In A Conversation With Mid Day
“People talk about the World Cup, but if you ask people who follow cricket all over the world, they will always remember those (2018-19 and 2020-21) series in Australia. How many teams have been able to go to Australia and beat them (in the series)? It’s like teams used to go to the West Indies in the 1980s and beat them. I don’t think any team has done that.”
He further said, “When you go there and win 2consecutive series, you capture people’s imagination and every cricketer knows that playing a series in Australia is one of the toughest tasks. Beating them on their own ground demands a special practice and cricket.”
Both The Wins Are 24 Carat: Shastri
Ravi Shastri further compared these two victories of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy to the personal achievements he has achieved in his playing career. He said that despite being part of the World Cup winning team in 1983, he gives more importance to these two victories.
Shastri said, “This (Border-Gavaskar) may not be the WC trophy, but it is the biggest achievement of my career and I have been part of a World Cup winning team (1983) and a Cricket World Championship winning team (1985). I have also done commentary of World Cup matches, but these two victories in Australia are 24 carat.”
Let us tell you that, India is now preparing for the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which is going to start from November 22 in Perth. Team India would like to score a hat-trick of series wins.
