Dennis Compton is a cricket legend who is now almost forgotten. He was one of the key players who helped cricket grow in the early 1900s. Compton played cricket for Middlesex and also played football for the famous Arsenal team. In England’s sports history, Dennis Compton’s name is well known and respected.
Along with 86-year-old Compton, another young English player is getting attention—James Rew. He made just 2 runs in his debut match for the touring team against India. In 2022, he managed only 1 century for the whole year.
But in 2024-25, Rew showed a huge improvement. He became the youngest player since Dennis Compton to score 10 centuries in county cricket. Compton had scored his 10th first-class century in 1939 when he was 20 years and 353 days old.
James Reu was 21 years and 114 days old when he scored his 10th century against Essex. He was the star of Somerset’s win over Essex in the County Championship Division One match on Monday. Chasing 321 runs, Somerset was struggling at 71 for 4, but Reu’s 116 runs from 189 balls brought them close to victory.
Reu hit his first county century in 2022. In the 2023 season, he made 1,086 runs in 14 matches, averaging 57.15 with five centuries, becoming the top scorer in Division One. The next season, he scored two more centuries in 14 games.
This season, he started with 152 runs in the opening match against Worcestershire. After waiting 5 innings, he finally scored another century in the second innings against Essex yesterday, setting a new record.
