New Zealand cricket team’s most successful coach Gary Stead has decided to bid farewell to Kiwi cricket. He will bid farewell to Kiwi cricket after a long 7 years when his contract expires next month. Gary Stead, who led the New Zealand team to the World Test Championship, kept the team in the midst of consistency for a long time.
He has played the team in three global tournament finals. He won the Test series against India by 3-0. Despite all this, he removed himself from white-ball cricket a few days ago. He gave himself time to think about his future in red-ball cricket. However, he finally decided to leave at the end of his contract.
He took over as coach in 2018, replacing Mike Hesson. The following year, he took the team to the 2019 World Cup final. There, New Zealand lost the World Cup title due to a boundary after a very dramatic match.

Then in 2021, New Zealand won the World Test Championship against India under Stead, the first global title in the country’s history. In addition, Gary Stead was the coach of the team in the 2021 T20 World Cup final, the 2025 Champions Trophy final, and two more semi-finals (2022 T20, 2023 ODI).

Gary Stead, who decided to step down after a long stint, said, “Everything we have done in the last seven years has been based on playing our best for the country. We have grown from the foundation laid by Brendon McCullum and Mike Hesson. Our aim has been to consistently compete and show our opponents that the Black Caps are not easy to beat.”
He said, “Working for a small country of five million people, with limited resources, yet competing with the best teams in the world — it’s a matter of pride.”
However, Gary Steed is not saying goodbye to the coaching profession just yet. For now, he wants to rest and spend time with his family. After that, the 53-year-old coach will announce his return to work in a new place.
