Shubman Gill is often compared to Sachin Tendulkar for his cricket skills. There are even online rumors linking him to Sachin’s daughter. While Shubman surely hopes to achieve greatness like Sachin on the field, what happened yesterday was a little embarrassing for him.
In the IPL match yesterday, Shubman Gill’s Gujarat Titans faced Mumbai Indians, the team connected with Sachin Tendulkar’s legacy. During the rain-shortened game, Gujarat had a target of 147 runs in 19 overs. At Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, Gill scored 43 runs from 46 balls.
This slow scoring rate placed Gill in a rare group. In IPL history, only three times has a captain had a strike rate below 100 in their last 40 innings. The first two times were by Sachin Tendulkar. Gill matched that yesterday. In the IPL’s very first match in 2008, Sachin scored 40 off 43 balls against Bangalore with a strike rate of 93.02.
In 2011, Sachin scored 46 runs off 50 balls against Delhi, with a strike rate of 92. Yesterday, Shubman Gill was out with a strike rate of 93.47.
Lowest Strike Rate by Captains in IPL with 40+ Runs

92.00 – Sachin Tendulkar vs Delhi Capitals, 2011
93.02 – Sachin Tendulkar vs Royal Challengers Bangalore, 2008
93.47 – Shubman Gill vs Mumbai Indians, 2025
No other captain in the IPL has scored 40 runs with a strike rate below 100, except Shubman and Sachin.
Interestingly, their teams have never lost when these two players have played these innings. In 2011, Mumbai won by 8 wickets with 19 balls remaining. In 2008, Mumbai won by 9 wickets with 2 overs left. In yesterday’s match, Gujarat won on the last ball, taking them to the top of the points table in this year’s IPL.
