According to reports, Shubman Gill is currently leading the race to become the Test captain. Meanwhile, head coach Gautam Gambhir has given a big response regarding who will be India’s next Test captain.
Gautam Gambhir did not name any player

According to a report by News18, head coach Gautam Gambhir said that the captain of the Test team will be someone who can lead India consistently in the next two years of the ICC Test Championship cycle along with the England tour. Gambhir made it clear that the decision on the captaincy of the team will be a collective one, which will include the BCCI, selectors and a big think tank.
Although the head coach did not confirm any name, he indicated that continuity and stability will be given priority for the new ICC Test Championship cycle that begins after the final between Australia and South Africa in June.
When Jasprit Bumrah’s name was mentioned as the Test captain, Gautam Gambhir indicated that a young player like Shubman Gill could be chosen as a long-term option. He also rejected the idea of a single captain in all formats. He said that in future different captains will be considered for each format.
Gambhir said this about Virat and Rohit’s retirement
Gautam Gambhir also broke his silence on Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s decision to retire from Test cricket. He has called it a personal choice of both the legends and has urged to respect their decisions.
In an interview given to News18, Gautam Gambhir said,
“I think when you start playing and when you want to finish is a very personal decision. Nobody has the right – be it a coach, selector or anybody in this country – to tell someone when to retire. It comes from within.”
