Kane Williamson, who previously captained Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL and played for several franchises, was not picked up in this year’s IPL auction. As a result, he will play in the upcoming Pakistan PSL. Meanwhile, the experienced New Zealand batsman will take on a new role in the IPL as a commentator and match analyst. His name is included in the list of commentators released by the broadcasting channel.
Last season, Williamson played for Gujarat Titans but appeared in only two matches, scoring a modest 27 runs, with little impact. This time, despite registering for the auction, no team showed interest in him. Since New Zealand has no major international fixtures during the IPL, the broadcasting channel offered Williamson the role of a commentator, which he accepted. He will join experts like Sunil Gavaskar, Ravi Shastri, Virender Sehwag, Anil Kumble, Harbhajan Singh, and others in the commentary team.
The 18th edition of the IPL kicks off today (Saturday), with last year’s champion Kolkata Knight Riders facing Royal Challengers Bangalore at Eden Gardens in Kolkata at 8 pm.
