World Kabaddi is the official governing body for Kabaddi, with 56 national federations as members.
Recently, World Kabaddi responded to the International Kabaddi Federation (IKF) after the IKF called the Kabaddi World Cup in Midlands, England, “illegitimate” and “illegal.” The IKF pointed out that none of the national federations that were part of the Asian Games Kabaddi events took part in this tournament.
This World Kabaddi-organized event, held from March 17 to 23, was the second edition of the competition. The men’s event had nine teams, and the women’s event had six teams. India won both categories. However, the Amateur Kabaddi Federation of India (AKFI) said it did not give permission for these teams to compete. The IKF later criticized the event, calling it a “Fake World Cup” and warning that actions would be taken against those involved.
World Kabaddi responded to allegations made by the IKF, calling them irresponsible and malicious. They highlighted their experience in organizing international tournaments, including the 2019 World Cup and various European and African championships, and announced plans to host more events. World Kabaddi emphasized that their Kabaddi World Cup is independent of any other federation.
They referred to a legal case between the International Surfing Federation and the International Canoe Federation, where the Court of Arbitration for Sport ruled that multiple governing bodies can exist for the same sport. Although the IKF is part of the Asian Olympic Council and organizes the Asian Games, it is not recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which doesn’t officially recognize Kabaddi.
World Kabaddi claimed they are being targeted because they are based outside of India, while organizations like IKF and others are based there. They suggested the IKF’s actions are driven by pride and their belief that they control the sport in India.
They also questioned the IKF’s credibility, pointing out that the Supreme Court of India has directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to look into their activities. Additionally, World Kabaddi criticized IKF President Dr. Vinod Kumar’s involvement with multiple organizations that do not align with India’s rules on dual citizenship.
World Kabaddi also mentioned their global support, with fifty-six national federations and five continental bodies behind them, compared to the IKF’s seventeen. They noted their past attempts to collaborate with the IKF were met with negativity. As a result, they are considering legal action after consulting with legal partners and their Central Board.
Despite these issues, World Kabaddi highlighted the popularity of the Kabaddi World Cup, which has been broadcast live on platforms like BBC iPlayer and DD Sports. They confirmed their plans to organize the next World Cup in 2027, to be hosted by the Pan America Kabaddi Association, marking the first time the event will be held in the Americas.
